STORY | Marvele Shibambu and the error that stole his dream of studying medicine

Marvele Shibambu, a young man from Vhembe East in Limpopo did matric in 2021 but decided to repeat it in 2022 because he didn't have enough marks to study medicine. He was determined to get good marks that he studied day and night in order to achive the required marks to secure university admission at Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University.

In January this year the matric results were released and Shibambu archived distinctions in all subjects except Life Sciences.

89% for Maths,

92% for Geography,

92% for Physical Science,

80% for Xitsoga,

82% for English,

95% for Life Orientation

54% for Life Sciences

Shibambu says that he knew immediately that the 54% is a mistake. He told the principal, teachers and everyone that 54% was not his mark. He told them that he repeated Matric because he obtained level 6 passes (70% - 79%) in many of his subjects in 2021.

With his face full of tears, Shibambu decided to immediately apply for re-mark of the Life Sciences paper as he strongly believed that a mistake was committed. On the 23rd of March he was informed that he obtained 82% for Life Sciences. The department told him that an error occurred during transcription of the mark from the his Life Sciences script to the mark sheet.

However, the new mark didn't change anything because Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University(SMU) has already rejected him based on his January mark of 54%. He is currently studying applied maths and statistics at the University of Cape Town.

Life is no different than the weather. Not only is it unpredictable, but it shows us a new perspective of the world every day. Despite all your efforts, you never know when the next high or low will strike you. The trick is to keep moving. Ke Life.
