FEATURE | Meet Honey Ledwaba, the Founder and CEO of Honey Laundry
If the high rates of unemployment and mounting job losses have taught us anything, it is that nobody’s job is safe. Unfortunately for most people, their only source of income is from their job, which can be a risky way to live. A person who has residual bills also deserves to have residual income that can take care of those bills.
In the 21st Century, we have more access to information, people and opportunities than ever before. It thus make sense to celebrate people who fight for what they believe in, who don't let obstacles hold them back, and who inspire us all to be better versions of ourselves. Analy Online's feature platform is specially designed for this purpose.
Meet Honey Ledwaba, the founder and CEO of Honey Laundry. Honey is a determined, resilent and ambitious young woman who displays a successful mixture of design and practicality. She grew up in the rural side of Limpopo and like many other young people in Limpopo, after completing matric she relocated to Gauteng where she currently stays in Tembisa. Upon arriving in Tembisa Honey found a job at a mall where she worked as a store assistant.
Although the job was paying well and life was afloat, however, after more than five years in retail an idea of owning a business crossed her mind. Initially, she did not know what type of business she wanted to start. All she wanted to do was to start something and be independent.
To start a business, Honey decided to conduct a research in her area to identify the most urgent needs of the residents of her community. Her research found that many people in her area are always at work and thus do not have time to do the basic things in the house like cooking, laundry and gardening, among other things.
After two years of research and fact finding, Honey decided to open Honey Laundry which started operating this year in March. Honey Laundry offers washing, ironing, folding, dry cleaning, shoe washing and other related services.
"I noticed that there was a growing demand for a laundry business as people are most always busy and rarely get time to do any laundry, especially the blankets. Coupled with the fact that many people are reluctant to start this type of business, I decided to take this route", Honey said.
She then proceeded to the next step of her business journey by applying for funding from organisations that assist start up enterprises. Unfortunately, she did not meet the requirements to qualify for funding and her application was subsequently rejected.
"...being rejected for funding did not discourage me and my dream of owning a business. Instead, i decided to use my savings to build a room for my business, buy equipment (washing machine, iron/steam irons, ironing boads, dryers, temble dryers) and other necessary material to start operating."
"Starting a business has taught me that in order for any business to succeed, one must learn to engage and learn from other similar businesses. Pride doesn't help when one is an entrepreneur. You need to have a teachable mind and learn from others."
"We recently got a deal with The FIX, a brand of The Foschini Group, to wash fitting room curtains for its three branches in Gauteng. We are excited and this is a great opportunity for our business," She added.
The business currently employs one person and operates 07 days a week.
